La History Digital Library, nell’edificio medievale “Casa del Turista” sul lungomare di Brindisi, è un’innovativa biblioteca di comunità capace di soddisfare ogni tipologia di fruitore e trasformarsi in un luogo per un apprendimento emotivo, oltre che cognitivo, in cui si alimentano saperi ed esperienze.

è un luogo d’incontro adatto a tutte le età e ad ogni necessità: dallo studioso al turista, dalle scuole alle famiglie, dagli adulti ai bambini, ognuno potrà soddisfare la propria curiosità, ritagliarsi uno spazio per apprendere e partecipare alla realizzazione di nuovi percorsi di conoscenza ed eventi a tema storico.

La formula è quella di un itinerario che si snoda all’interno di un “museo della narrazione”, dove gli allestimenti filologici e i video racconti coinvolgono il visitatore che potrà approfondire la Storia con l’ausilio della tecnologia, nel contrappunto tra passato e futuro.Book Experience, il percorso sensoriale allestito al piano terra, è un viaggio che si propone di stimolare la conoscenza dei materiali e degli strumenti grafologici che hanno preceduto la comparsa del libro a stampa. La Community Library al piano primo, con supporti tecnologici e raccolte librarie, è uno spazio ideale per laboratori, eventi, attività didattiche, esperienze di realtà virtuale, sviluppo di applicazioni e giochi a tema. Ideale per le scuole, le associazioni, le start-up e, naturalmente, i singoli cittadini.

Comunicare è vita. Lo scopo dell’esistenza umana è quello di evolversi facendo tesoro dell’esperienza accumulata nel corso dei secoli. Nel percorso sensoriale “Book Experience” avrai l’occasione di rivivere le tappe che hanno permesso la straordinaria avventura della comunicazione scritta, dai graffiti rupestri al libro digitale. Dipingerai come i nostri progenitori che, fin dal Paleolitico, hanno lasciato tracce di sé raffigurando scene di vita quotidiana con i colori che la natura metteva loro a disposizione. Scoprirai come la nascita della civiltà, nelle aree dei grandi fiumi, abbia portato alla necessità di codificare un’enorme quantità di informazioni. Proverai così a modellare e incidere le tavolette di argilla, cimentandoti con i simboli grafici che rappresentavano idee, oggetti e azioni prima che i suoni emessi per pronunciare le parole si trasformassero in alfabeto.

Attraverso la fitta trama del papiro e della pergamena proseguirai il viaggio letterario dei nostri antenati; dai primi testi giuridici, necessari per far conoscere e rispettare le leggi, fino alla letteratura e alla filosofia, alla storia e alla matematica, varcando la soglia di spazi illimitati della conoscenza. Dopo aver intinto le penne d’oca nell’inchiostro, potrai metterti alla prova con la paziente arte degli amanuensi, che hanno garantito la conservazione di una immensa produzione libraria. Allievo del mastro cartaio, creerai il tuo foglio di carta per poi imparare da Gutenberg il segreto della rivoluzionaria stampa a caratteri mobili, che ha aperto la via dell’istruzione e del sapere universale.

I gradini della Books Stair ti condurranno alla Libreria del futuro; immerso nel profumo delle pagine di carta, circondato da robot e giganteschi schermi touchscreen, partirai per un viaggio virtuale verso le nuove frontiere delle parole.La History Digital Library è l’astronave, l’immenso universo della conoscenza è la meta. La Casa del Turista è uno degli edifici comunali di più rilevante interesse storico-artistico. Il complesso, articolato su tre livelli, reca sulla facciata i segni delle varie interpretazioni avute nel corso dei secoli. L’arco d’accesso a sesto acuto, composto di conci bicromi, reca nella chiave di volta una croce in rilievo, quasi certamente dell’ordine monastico-cavalleresco di San Giovanni, oggi di Malta, che, subentrato nel possesso ai Templari, provvide nel tempo a progressivi ampliamenti. Il complesso aveva funzione di magazzino per le merci in transito e di ospitalità per i pellegrini diretti o provenienti dalla Terra Santa. Durante il periodo invernale, le imbarcazioni erano custodite nella darsena per essere messe in mare in primavera e più precisamente il 27 aprile, giorno ritenuto quello dell’arrivo delle reliquie di san Teodoro, patrono della città. Adiacente era la chiesa di San Giovanni, loro santo tutelare, di cui alcuni resti sono nel limitrofo palazzo Cocotò.  Soppresso l’Ordine, una parte dell’area, dopo una fase di abbandono, è stata ricostruita incorporando le strutture medievali, per ospitare una scuola marinara quasi a porre l’accento, nel variare dei tempi e delle situazioni, sulla sua funzione al servizio del porto e della città.

The Community Library on the first floor, with technological supports and library collections, is an ideal space for workshops, events, educational activities, virtual reality experiences, development of applications and themed games. Ideal for schools, associations, start-ups, and, of course, individual citizens. Communication is life. The purpose of human existence is to evolve by taking advantage of the experience accumulated over the centuries. In the sensory path of the Book Experience, you will have the opportunity to relive the stages that have allowed the extraordinary adventure of written communication, from rock engravings to digital books. You will paint like our ancestors who, since the Paleolithic, have left traces of themselves by depicting scenes of everyday life with the colours that nature made available to them. You will discover how the birth of civilization, in the areas of large rivers, led to the need to codify a tremendous amount of information. So you will try to model and engrave the clay tablets, trying your hand at the graphic symbols that once represented ideas, objects, and actions before the sounds emitted to pronounce the words were transformed into the alphabet. Through the dense texture of papyrus and parchment, you will continue the literary journey of our ancestors; from the first legal texts, necessary to make the laws known and respected, up to literature and philosophy, history and mathematics, crossing the threshold of unlimited spaces of knowledge. After dipping goose feathers in ink, you can test yourself with the patient art of scribes, who have guaranteed the conservation of immense book production. Student of the master papermaker, you will create your own sheet of paper and then learn from Gutenberg the secret of the revolutionary movable type printing, which paved the way for education and universal knowledge. The steps of the Books Stair will lead you to the Library of the future; immersed in the scent of paper pages, surrounded by robots and giant touch screens, you will leave for a virtual journey towards the new frontiers of words.The History Digital Library is the spaceship; the immense universe of knowledge is the goal. La Casa del Turista is one of the most important historical and artistic municipal buildings in the city. The edifice’s structure is organized on three levels, and its façade shows the signs of the various interpretations to which it has been exposed over the centuries. At the entrance, a pointed arch, composed of bichrome ashlars, bears in the keystone a cross in relief, almost certainly of the monastic-knightly Order of St. John, today the Order of Malta. The Order took over from the Templars, and it provided, over time, for progressive enlargements of the building. The structure also served as a warehouse for goods in transit and hospitality for pilgrims going to or coming from the Holy Land. In winter, the boats were kept in the dock to be put into the sea in springtime and, more precisely, on April 27th, which was considered the day of the arrival of the relics of St. Theodore, patron saint of the city. Adjacent to the building, there was the church of St. John, their protector saint, of which some remains are in the neighbouring Cocotò palace. Once the Order had been suppressed, a part of the area, after a phase of abandonment, was rebuilt. It incorporated the medieval structures to house a marine school as if to emphasize, in varying times and situations, its function in the service of the port and city.
